Early morning 12-12-12, the Internet was fired-up (again!) with predictions about THE END. It is about time I get a piece of the pie. Seriously. We have a plethora of “crystal gazers” who conjure up extremely pessimistic and destructive scenarios and somehow manage to become instant global celebrities and last-day gurus. When the predictions are falsified, they comically push away the date by a few decades and appear back on TV -- calculation error, oops! The next goodbye date is ... and, yes, please read my new book (on surviving the grand finale) so I can retire as a millionaire while you stress your heart out and stock-up on groceries. Make up your mind. Are we going or not?
With all respects to H-Factor (H=Horror) fans, I must admit these end-tellers must be gifted marketing geniuses -- perhaps a rare M-Gene (M=Marketing) mutation -- to have convinced over half of the intelligent life on earth that this year (or any year) is going to be their very last.
Come on. The Creator is universally extolled as a Loving Being and based on the universe's super-intelligent design, I am sure He recognizes that the ROI on our transformation is much higher than on our annihilation. I must confess: I was left out when the crystal balls were being handed out, but I am very confident that mother-earth is not going away anytime soon and we will continue patrolling around the sun for a very long time (Cosmic Time, that is). Isn't the giant fire-erupting orange ball intriguing?
Fortunately, I can tap into common sense, creativity, experience, and strategic insights to share my “Boomsday” Career Predictions for 2013, which I optimistically envision as a year of energy, progress, and prosperity (inside-out). After all that we have been through in 2012, it is time to enjoy the holiday season with positive thinking and wonderful hopes for 2013. Read on:
The overall economy will improve
Over the past few months, the unemployment rates have been declining steadily. Hopefully, increased spending from the holiday season will synergize the impact of job growth to propel the economy toward forward-looking direction.
The manufacturing sector
Made in America is going to be back in vogue, at least with larger companies. I am not saying off-shoring will discontinue. In fact, I predict that more and more small businesses will outsource their requirements to other destinations. Don't despair. I also believe that a large proportion of small businesses will explore overseas markets, reclaim the lost fortune, and reinvest locally. Balance is going to be the mantra in 2013.
The technology sector
The technology sector may witness some re-shuffling as larger corporations will pursue consolidations and focus on acquisitions, but smaller startups will continue introducing new technologies and driving employment numbers upward.
Healthcare won't slowdown
Apart from the aging Baby Boomer population, many small businesses will take proactive steps to comply with The Affordable Care Act (which takes effect in 2014). The act poses mandatory insurance requirements, which in turn could have a positive ripple effect on the healthcare sector and its workforce.
Financial and real estate markets will stabilize
Financial markets have always been volatile and reflective of sudden market fluctuations. Yet, as the overall GDP grows, investments within this sector will increase and reverse a lot of “negative dump” (you know what I mean) from the 2008 financial debacle. The recovery won’t be miraculous but steady progress is possible.

Personal career choices will witness a renewed commitment
Work life balance has been sacrificed during the past few years, but based on my interactions with clients and executives in numerous countries, the trend is indicative of a renewed enthusiasm toward greater work-life balance and personal career choices. Career passion will be a priority over “need-the-job-to-pay-my-bills”.
Guess which sector will drive job growth
No rocket science here. Yes, small businesses will grow rapidly in 2013 and a large pool of startups will be waiting for your resumes to pour in, at least during the first quarter.
Still vacillating?
If you still don't believe the earth will survive, there are some creative billionaire entrepreneurs planning space missions and mars colonies -- perhaps a giant glass tent mimicking the earth's atmospheric conditions. Backup strategy! Some technology firms are working on teleportation as well. Even if technical glitches were less than 5%, I would be horrified to be a victim of misplaced extremities -- can't risk beaming my legs in place of hands. I would much rather practice the art of astral projection.
Interested in Plan B? Red is not my favorite color and I am not keen on trading my work-suit for a spacesuit but if you decide to visit the Red Planet, I could friend you on Mars-book and you are welcome to visit me here on earth. Your MFs (Martian Friends) are welcome as well.
Wait, please don't tell me they are predicting the solar system's demise now. Happy holidays and stay cheerful :)
