Mindset
Think of the interview as if it were a business meeting -- a
collaboration, not an interrogation. You have to select them as much
as they have to select you. Ask relevant, intelligent questions to
keep the flow of the conversation collaborative. Prepare a list of
five to ten questions you could ask during or at the close of the
interview.
Connect
Connect with the interviewer. If two candidates have similar
skills and experience, the interviewer is more likely to choose the
candidate who was easier to connect with.
Sound enthusiastic and interested
Sound extremely enthusiastic about
the potential job. All of your answers must convey a strong interest
in the company and the prospective position.
Listen carefully
Far too often, candidates don’t listen to the
conversation carefully and provide irrelevant answers to questions
that were never asked in the first place. Pay careful attention to
what is being discussed. In other words, listen as if you were a blind
person.
Length of the answers
Avoid giving extremely long or short answers.
Depending on the question being asked, sometimes, 2–3 minutes may be
an appropriate length for the answer.
Postpone salary talk
If possible, avoid discussing salary until the
final interview. If absolutely necessary, provide a range.
Talk benefits, not features
So what’s the difference? These examples
will help bring out the distinction between features and benefits:
Features
I have two masters’ degrees.
I have over five years’ experience in management.
Benefits
My two masters’ degrees have provided me with a wealth of knowledge in
the area of XYZ that I could use to resolve your company’s XXXXXX
problem and also to increase profits for your company …
My five years’ management experience has honed my leadership skills; I
cam confident that I can use these leadership skills to build
performance-driven teams for your company …
In simple words, features describe what you have to offer, while
benefits translate how your offerings could benefit an employer.
Prepare interview scripts
Prepare interview scripts, such as 3-point
(or 5-point) marketing message, success stories, and plenty of
examples and stories for common
interview questions. Be prepared to
tell the interviewer how you handled a specific situation or resolved
a challenge or problem. Examples and stories arouse interest and
reinforce your suitability (based on past behavior).
