Employers are often flexible when it
comes to hiring policies

Ever been turned
down for a job because of lack of either degree or experience?
When it comes to
job search, candidates often mistakenly believe that hiring policies
and employer protocols are etched in stone. Incorrect. Many employers
understand that they will have to make reasonable accommodations to
attract, hire, and retain top talent.
Consider the case of John:
John Smith was interested in applying for a pharmacoeconomics
fellowship with a globally-recognized pharmaceutical company. It was a
generally accepted notion that these prestigious fellowships were
reserved for the cream, especially those applicants who had at least a
Pharm.D. or a Ph.D. John was clearly not qualified for the fellowship
because he had recently completed his master’s and was on his way to
acquiring an MBA.
Undeterred by his “lack” of qualifications, John took the initiative
and cold called the company. After passing through a few gatekeepers
and screeners, he finally managed to secure face time with the
director of the outcomes research department.
Smith was well prepared for this moment and had written a detailed
script with many compelling reasons as to why he qualified for the
position despite his lack of “acceptable” qualifications. Within the
short appointment, he convinced the director that his background would
not only enrich the program, but also benefit other students. It
worked. He was extended an invitation to apply for the program -- a
first in the company’s history.
John’s success should not be attributed to coincidence or serendipity.
Sarah was an accomplished IT professional. She had a stellar track
record and remarkable accomplishments, all related to technology
though. Her life-long ambition was to become a project manager. Being
aware that traditional job search strategies would not facilitate her
transition, she developed a comprehensive networking strategy and
decided to talk to employers face-to-face versus just responding to
help wanted ads.
At one networking event, she met a C-level executive from a leading IT
company. The meeting was successful and she is now a senior project
manager with the organization.
From compensation packages to promotional opportunities to job
responsibilities to degree and experience requirements, many companies
often go the extra mile to recruit a promising employee, especially
one who takes the initiative to bring about change.
